Private sewage systems need consent
NIEA’s guidance says private sewage treatment systems, including septic tanks and package treatment plants, require its consent. England’s General Binding Rules are not the NI consent process.

DAERA provides a Domestic Consent Public Register and an online application/transfer route. Ask NIEA which process fits the property, especially where more than one dwelling or another use is involved.

- Check unclear or missing records with NIEA rather than assuming a previous owner obtained consent.
Understand the public desludging option
Qualifying households can receive one free NI Water desludge within twelve months, subject to access and safety conditions. Read the service conditions and do not assume a private firm follows the same tariff.

Before work or a change of owner
- Ask NIEA which ownership or system-change process applies.
- Have the system, discharge location, connected dwellings and proposed works ready.
- Check that the proposed system and work match the actual consent conditions.
- For a private waste collection, ask for the carrier identity and check the applicable NIEA registration.
