Septic tank rules in Wales

NRW registration eligibility depends on the system and its location.

Registration is often available, not automatic

NRW says septic tanks and package treatment plants most often need a one-off free registration. Read the eligibility conditions; this is not a promise that every system qualifies. Check with NRW if the circumstances are unclear.

The discharge route matters

For a surface-water discharge, NRW says a package treatment plant must be used. Ground-discharge arrangements have separate conditions and use a drainage field. Ask NRW about the applicable route rather than assuming a tank alone qualifies.

Existing systems and the 2010 date

NRW’s guide distinguishes systems in operation before 6 April 2010 from later systems. Start date, standards and location affect the registration assessment. Read the complete eligibility guidance for the actual site.

Information to have ready

  • Ask whether the existing system has a registration or permit and get its record.
  • Identify the discharge route, start date, volume and proposed changes.
  • Ask NRW about sensitive-site, water-supply and public-sewer checks.
  • If registration is not available, ask NRW which permit or other route is needed.
  • Check the actual waste carrier separately before arranging emptying.
This guide does not decide whether a particular installation meets every condition. Check unclear rules with your nation's regulator, and service, design or price questions with the firm.
